Web Directory Submission and Traffic

Web Directory submission is one of the many other processes which generates good traffic for one site. Dmoz is the directory of Google, from which google even started building the pages in it’s own directory. Dmoz is free and recently I've found AOL partnered with them and Google brought the new directory services under their sub-domain and most probably the largest human written directory service available to the Earth, still if you want to submit the site, you'll find they take help of Dmoz an Open Directory project. I know I’m fan of google but trust me, most of the directories like Yahoo Directory and others are not free listing directories.

Once your site has been accepted into the Open Directory, it may take anywhere from 2 weeks to several months for your site to be listed on partner sites which use the Open Directory data, such as AOL Search, AltaVista, HotBot, Google, Lycos, Netscape Search, etc. They make updates of the data available weekly, but each partner has their own update schedule.

Directories catalog links for easy access to users. Much earlier, directories were the primary source for web users to find websites on various topics. Today search engines have taken over but directories have not lost their importance yet. You cannot obviously expect too much traffic from a directory submission. Depending on the quality of the directory and the number of back links your website has, search engines will be able to determine your relevance and qualify your website accordingly.

Note how important listing in a directory is. If your website is low on content but rich in images, flash content, etc. search engines may not be able to categorize your website when the search spider visits your site. By submitting to a directory under a particular category, you allow the search engine to categorize your site under a relevant topic.
